interactions with ice

tips and resources

Masked federal agents have been terrorizing our communities. Hands Off NYC is here to make sure you know your rights, understand what to do in tense situations, and feel equipped to share this information with others. Below are resources and practical tips to help you and your community.

what you can do

grab a whistle

GRAB A WHISTLE

Whistles are simple tools for fast alerts, used around the country.

On the streets, whistles alert neighbors to what is going on. They can alert people to form a crowd, bear witness, and express themselves.

If you see ICE in the neighborhood, blow your whistle in short bursts.

If you witness ICE detaining someone, blow the whistle in a long, repeated pattern.

know your rights

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

For Know Your Rights information in many languages, bookmark OurCityOurRights.org, a know-your-rights resource for New Yorkers who are immigrants (i.e., anyone who is not a natural-born U.S. Citizen) and people engaging in protest

One of the most powerful tools we have are the rights this country affords us. By knowing your rights, you know your neighbor’s rights, and we can all stay safer.

make a plan

MAKE A PLAN

Take some time to think about what you might do if you encounter ICE or DHS in New York City. You have the right to:

  1. Blow a whistle, to express yourself and spread information.

  2. Call the hotline at (229)-304-8720 with SALUTE information.

  3. Film the interaction, and submit footage to the Attorney General’s portal. It is best to get this video to someone who may know the person being detained.

  4. Ask questions about the agent’s names, or if they have a warrant.

  5. Form a crowd, get loud.
